How Legit Index KE works

A plain-language guide to how we collect prices, how you can contribute, and how to get the most out of the platform.

For buyers: checking a price

1

Open the price tracker

Visit prices.legitcheck.co.ke. The homepage loads a live table of all tracked products with their current retail and wholesale prices.

2

Find your product

Use the search bar or category pills to filter by fuel, food, LPG, utilities or household goods. Prices are sorted by category by default. You can also sort by biggest price changes this week.

3

Click for history and detail

Click any product row to open the detail panel. You'll see the current price, a trend chart showing price movement over 7 days, 1 month and 1 year, and a breakdown of where the price comes from.

4

Compare retail vs wholesale

Where data is available, both retail and wholesale prices are shown. If you're buying in bulk โ€” as a shopkeeper, caterer or household buying in quantity โ€” the wholesale column shows you the market rate.

5

Share or set an alert

Use the share buttons to send a price to your WhatsApp contacts or groups. Use the Price Alert form in the sidebar to get notified when a price crosses a threshold you care about.

How prices are collected

๐Ÿ› Official   Regulatory data

Fuel (petrol, diesel, kerosene) and electricity prices come directly from EPRA and Kenya Power. These update automatically when regulators publish new figures. They are always accurate as of the last official review.

  • EPRA โ€” fuel price reviews every 2 months
  • KPLC โ€” token unit prices updated per tariff review

โœ“ Community   Member submissions

Food, LPG and household prices are submitted by registered community members who have seen or paid the price at a real shop, market or wholesaler. All submissions are reviewed against historical data before being published.

  • Nairobi markets: Wakulima, City Market, Eastleigh
  • Supermarkets: Carrefour, Naivas, Quickmart
  • Wholesale traders and distributors

Submitting a price

Anyone with a free Legit Index account can submit a price. The more people submit, the more accurate and up-to-date the platform becomes. Here's how:

  1. Create a free account or sign in (same account as Legit Check KE if you have one)
  2. Click Report a Price in the navigation bar
  3. Select the product from the dropdown
  4. Enter the price you saw, and choose retail or wholesale
  5. Optionally add the shop name and town for better context
  6. Submit โ€” your price is reviewed and published within 24 hours

We especially welcome prices from outside Nairobi โ€” Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret and other towns where prices often differ significantly.

Understanding the price table

Retail vs wholesale

Retail prices are what a shopper pays buying one unit at a supermarket or shop. Wholesale prices are what a buyer pays purchasing a larger quantity from a wholesaler or market. Both are shown in the table where available.

The 7D / 1M / 1Y columns

These columns show the percentage price change over the past 7 days, 1 month and 1 year respectively. A green number means the price has fallen (good for buyers). A red number means it has risen.

The trend sparkline

The small chart in the Trend column shows the price movement over the past 30 days at a glance โ€” useful for spotting products that are steadily rising or have recently spiked.

Official vs Community badge

The small badge next to each product name tells you the source. ๐Ÿ› Official means the price comes from a regulatory body. โœ“ Community means it was submitted by a community member.

Frequently asked questions

How often are prices updated?
Official prices like fuel are updated when EPRA publishes new figures, typically every two months. Community prices can update daily as members submit new observations from markets and shops.
Are the prices accurate?
Official prices are accurate as published by regulatory authorities. Community prices reflect real observations but may vary by location, brand or shop. Treat them as a strong guide โ€” a reference point to know whether you are being charged fairly โ€” not as a fixed guarantee.
Is Legit Index KE free to use?
Yes, completely free. Viewing prices, checking history and using the trend charts requires no account. Creating an account (also free) lets you submit prices, set price alerts and earn Legit credits.
What are Legit credits?
Legit credits are earned by submitting verified prices and are shared with the Legit Check KE platform. Credits earned on Legit Index can be used on Legit Check KE to access seller verification details. You get 5 free credits when you create an account.
Can I request a product to be added?
Yes โ€” use the Report a Price button and submit a price for a product not yet on the platform. The admin team reviews new product requests and adds them where there is community interest. You can also contact us via WhatsApp.
Why do prices differ from what I see at my local shop?
Prices vary by location, shop type, brand and buying quantity. The prices on Legit Index reflect a community average โ€” most users will find the prices close to what they pay, but a shop in a remote town may charge more than one in Nairobi CBD. Submit what you see locally to improve accuracy for your area.
